Language policy in Italian universities

Abstract In recent years, the significant expansion of English-medium instruction (EMI) programmes across higher education institutions outside English-speaking contexts has brought with it an inherent set language-related tensions and ambiguities. this article, we explore how a selection Italian universities have tackled these tensions. Via content analysis university policy documents, investigate key themes in them, orientations to language that entail. The results show English is seen as necessary for almost synonymous internationalisation, well can bring benefits both individuals. However, commitment multilingualism promotion from non-protectionist stance apparent documents analysed. This finding, argue, puts context apart other settings been previously investigated (e.g. Nordic countries), points original way which navigate ambiguities come process internationalisation.
